Breath Re-training

Dr. Derya has extensive training via the Postural Restoration Institute (PRI). PRI’s approach focuses on the importance of breathing patterns in achieving optimal health and wellness.

The human body functions in patterns which are asymmetrical in nature. In regards to breathing, the right and left sides of your diaphragm are very different, especially in size and orientation.

The right hemi-diaphragm is larger and more domed, making us feel more stable centering our weight on that side. The left hemidiaphragm is flatter and smaller, which makes it harder for us to shift our weight well onto our left side.

Because of this difference in right to left diaphragms, the right lung can become chronically compressed, and the left can be chronically expanded. This is the most common pattern, but other patterns can also occur, such as being bilaterally over extended as both hemi-diaphragms become flatter and lose their dome shape.

This asymmetry affects how you perform daily activities like walking, loading the dishwasher, carrying kids or grandkids, or even just sitting and standing.

When we don’t have good control of our diaphragms, we lose our ability to move freely in and out of positions, and to freely shift side to side. This may seem unimportant, but losing these abilities makes it much more likely that you’ll be injured, or it can result in other chronic pain syndromes.

Patterned ribcage and diaphragm mechanics can cause other issues such as sleep apnea, chronic cough, and vocal cord changes.

Dr. Derya works with you to correct the position of your ribcage and diaphragm so that you can move and shift freely and easily. You learn how to optimize your own body and it’s healing processes.

What to expect?

Dr. Derya will guide you through techniques to restore balanced breathing patterns. Sometimes we use tools like blowing into straws and balloons to help re-train breathing.
